And now for something completely different…
Yesterday was Andy’s day (I take one of my children to breakfast on Friday each week) and we were having a nice visit when he asked me, “Besides Dream Theater, Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Van Halen, what are your favorite bands?” I mumbled something about Metallica and King’s X and Norah Jones and Charlie Parker and then we talked about his favorites for a while, which include Aerosmith and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
When we got home I took a look at my .mp3 player to see if I could discern who my “favorites” are based on what I have stored on there. It’s pretty accurate. What follows is a list of every artist with 30 or more tracks on my player. I’ve excluded classical music, because when I ripped my classical CD collection the tagging was pretty inconsistent–sometimes the artist is the performer or orchestra or conductor, and other times it’s the composer. If classical pieces were included by composer you could count on seeing Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Handel, and Purcell (among others) in the list. Artists barely missing the cut include System of a Down, the Beastie Boys, The Chieftains, Iron Maiden, and The Who.
So, for what’s worth (not much!) here’s the list:
30: Bon Jovi
31: Christ Community Church College Ministry (Indelible Grace)
32: Blue Oyster Cult, Creed
33: Rage Against the Machine
34: The Prodigy
35: Def Leppard, Nickelback, Ozzy
36: Deliverance, Pink Floyd, U2
37: Wynton Marsalis
39: Dizzy Gillespie, Megadeth
40: Living Colour, Norah Jones
43: Baltimore Consort, Miles Davis
44: Kansas
45: Rich Mullins, Pantera
46: The Cambridge Singers
49: Oscar Peterson
52: Metallica
54: Charlie Parker
56: P.O.D.
58: King’s X
76: Dream Theater, Van Halen
89: Rush
92: Ronn McFarlane (Scottish Lute music)
96: Jamie Soles
97: Harry Connick, Jr.
100: Bud Powell
102: Led Zeppelin

I wonder how Rich Mullins would feel about his proximity to Pantera.

You should hear Pantera’s version of “Awesome God.” Yuck!

Thats very very interesting…with some of the bands you have listed on there you might want to give Tool’s most recent album a listen. It is much cleaner and much more mature for them…I think thier a spiritual element that pervades thier music much like S.O.D. It would be incredible just to have 15 minutes with the band to point to similarities and places where they seem so close to the right track or a real place of wisdom…maybe there are some points they really are…but anyway good picks! Miss you!

I’m pretty sure I have Tool’s most recent album. Great to hear from you Aaron!

No Iron Maiden? Horrors!

Sadly, I only have a couple of Iron Maiden records.

No wonder some of the members of your flock are going astray! One has 58 Petra songs on his IPOD and no Iron Maiden. You will have to give an account for this kind of leadership!

Yeah, that’s pretty distressing.

Seriously, dudes, I have 38 Iron Maiden songs… I only listed groups where I had more than 40 songs… COME ON!

Wow…another list of bands of which I am (apparently) woefully ignorant. I didn’t know you were a Rich Mullins fan! At least there is one that we both know!

I’m honored!

Hey, Pastor Sean.
I’m glad to see we have similar musical interests.
I move into the dorms on the 24th. I hope to find some students that will want to carpool to Wichita. If that doesn’t happen, do you think a family located closer to Sterling might be willing to take me the rest of the way? I would definitely be able to pay for my share in fuel costs.
On another note, what is the process for church membership at Trinity?
